We love to travel. And when we travel, we spend A LOT OF TIME TOGETHER! I have had so many people say to me that their family couldn't be together so much because they would drive each other crazy! So I got thinking, is it possible to get along with each other for long periods of time and actually enjoy it? YES!!! We do, and here is how.
Raising a child is not an easy task, but it is one of the most rewarding experiences in life. Parenting is a learning process that requires patience, love, and a lot of hard work. One of the most important aspects of parenting is teaching children to govern themselves. It is essential to teach children to be self-reliant, self-disciplined, and self-controlled.
On our first big road trip, Jason and I stumbled upon a sweet couple with their large family. We became friends, and one night I was expressing some frustrations with how the day had gone withy my children. She told me she was a mentor for Teaching Self Government, a parenting program directed at teaching children how to govern themselves. I was interested, so I quickly bought and read Parenting: A House United by Nicholeen Peck. I was hooked. In fact, after reading Nicholeen's book, Jason and I attended her parenting mastery class and eventually became mentors for Teaching Self Government. This program works! Fast forward a few years and I can honestly say that Teaching Self Government isn't just for the kids!
Self-government is the ability to manage oneself without being directed by external forces. In other words, it is the ability to govern oneself. Teaching children self-government involves teaching them how to control their emotions, manage their time, and make good decisions. Self-government is about developing self-awareness and self-discipline.
Self-government is a skill that can be learned and developed. It is not something that children are born with; instead, it is something that needs to be taught and modeled by parents. Children who learn self-government are more likely to be successful in life, have better relationships, and be happier. And who doesn't want that for their children?

Starting on your path to learning self government is exciting! It includes putting together a vision and family mission statement, establishing clear roles and boundaries, learning how to manage emotions, teaching your child and you what to say, regulating emotions and learning how to work as a unified family.
Now, we aren't perfect, but I can honestly say that we are doing so much better as a family. In fact, we often get told how well-behaved our children are. And most importantly, we get along and enjoy each other!
